Huge Department 56 Christmas Village For Sale!
There are nearly 300 pieces here - what a fantastic opportunity to get a serious jump start or supercharge your existing Christmas village!
These items are from the personal collection of Mrs. Wilda "Boo" Rowland, who for 39 years was the proprietor of the world renowned Luweibdeh Shop, situated in an 1800s tenant farmer's cottage in Fredonia, NY. One of the many things sold in her shop were Christmas villages, however the items pictured here were her personal pieces, part of an extensive Dickens village around the base of her huge Christmas Tree. The village was set up and carefully packed away each holiday season until it grew to the size where it was simply left up year round in the formal dining room of her 1860s Victorian Italianate home.
Given the age of these items and the fact that they have been used and on display their entire lives, most probably will need some cleaning or dusting, remnants of glitter or artificial snow may be present and the boxes are likely to be well worn, be written on, dirty or damaged. Any observed damage to the pieces themselves is noted. Photos on this page are of the actual items; any noted damage will be shown with close-ups.
You will notice that the description for each building states that it does not include the light bulb or cord. This is because Mrs. Rowland had these set up in an elaborate display using special cords that were available from Department 56 which have multiple lights on a single string instead of just one. If you are setting up a large village, that is really the best way to go, otherwise you end up with a mess of extension cords, adapters, etc. I will include all of these cords with the village, and if you want the plywood forms that this village was set up on (around the base of her Christmas tree), you are welcome to those as well.
With the exception of a tiny handful of items, these buildings, characters and accessories were retired
by Department 56 a long time ago. That means the vast majority of what you see here is no longer being made
and cannot be purchased new. The original purchase price of each item is listed (if known), and when I added them up, I discovered that if you were to purchase all of these new, you would have spent $4,501.00 - that's over $7,200 in today's dollars! Add in the pieces I was not able to find an original price for plus shipping and tax and the bottom line is that to create a collection of this size and scope today, you would need to spend somewhere between $9,000 and $10,000!
I am currently selling this village as one lot - I would greatly prefer to sell it all to one person, however
if it does not sell within a reasonable amount of time, I have everything cataloged and am prepared to sell
it off piece by piece via Amazon and eBay. If you are interested in this village but have some duplicates, you could certainly do the same! (If you check on Amazon, you will see that these pieces hold their value very well in general, and due to their collectible nature, some are actually selling for more than their original MSRP.) Selling it off piece by piece would certainly net the most money, however it would be some extra time and work to ship everything individually, plus this collection takes up a good deal of space, and
I could really use the extra room! If you are interested in purchasing this village for the purposes of selling it off individually for a profit, I have spent a great deal of time taking photos as well as organizing everything into an Excel spreadsheet, which I can include in the sale.
